The Indicator 5: Educational Environment (School Age) course provides participants with more information about IDEA Part B Indicator 5: Educational Environments (School Age). The course will provide: 

  • the legal foundation for the indicator;  

  • a deeper dive into the meaning of the indicator;  

  • a discussion of considerations for least restrictive environment (LRE);  

  • an examination of movement along a continuum of services; and  

  • resources for individualized education program (IEP) teams when considering placement options for students with disabilities.  

This course will provide participants with tools and a better understanding of how to facilitate discussion about the least restrictive environment that will result in more appropriate student placement along the LRE continuum. 


Alternate assessments are used to evaluate performance of students with significant cognitive disabilities who are unable to participate in general state assessments even with accommodations and the alternate assessment aligns to alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS). A student participating in alternate assessment should receive grade appropriate instruction via Prioritized Standards, which provide access to the general education curriculum at emerging, readiness (prerequisite), foundational, and less complex skill levels. 

The Science of Reading 101: The Basics takes an introductory look at the science of reading. This course examines why the science of reading is the future of reading instruction, defines the science of reading, and discusses the legal foundation for the use of evidence-based practices for reading instruction. The Science of Reading 101 is a required pre-requisite to The Science of Reading 102 which will take a deeper dive into the science of reading and how to implement it with fidelity. (The Science of Reading 102…Coming Soon!)
